Living at the Edge : Explorers, Exploiters and Settlers of the Grand Canyon Region
Published in Paperback by Grand Canyon Association (01 April, 1998)
Authors: Michael F. Anderson, Sandra Scott, L. Greer Price, and Pamela Frazier
Average review score:

For pioneer history of the Canyon, THIS IS THE BOOK!
The photos alone are worth the price of this oversized paperback. Mr. Anderson has assembled a detailed and engaging history of the "pioneer" period (1850-1930) at the South and North rims of the Grand Canyon (and the cliffs, slopes and water in between). The familiar names of trails and canyons are fleshed into the first hardy folks who endeavored to eek a livelihood out of northern Arizona's unforgiving desert canyon. We meet explorers, entrepreneurs and industrialists. Prospectors stake their claims, both legitimate and fraudulent. Mormons seek refuge from the laws of their own home state. Individuals fight their losing tugs-of-war against the Railroad/Concession/Park Service aliance. While treatment of prehistoric and early Spanish events is adequate to set the stage for discussing the later periods, it is not intended to be comprehensive [see On the Edge of Splendor]. This comfortably readable volume has finally clarified for me the preferential treatment of Fred Harvey Enterprises, the unmistakable ambivalence of the National Park Service toward its patrons (visitors), and the puzzling destruction of historic sites and abandonment of remote access roads by the NPS. This is great reading for any Canyon junkie.

The Long Canyon Mountains
Published in Paperback by Infinity Publishing.com (10 October, 2002)
Author: Brian D. Kelling
Average review score:

Great Western
Brian Kelling really has a cracking good western with The Long Canyon Mountains. His use of actual and believeable characters from the period like Deputy Elfego Baca and John J. Blackjack Pershing as a young Lieutenant fresh from West Point is refreshing and real. Buck Ford is the main character, and when he falls for Miss Lassen, trouble comes his way. Throw in a fortune in gold and silver, a corrupt army official, a cavalry charge along with the bar-room shootout, and you've got a fast-paced, in-depth western along the lines of Louis L'Amour. Yet somehow, this author really brings you in as the main character. You really feel like you're there. Excellent and highly recommended.

The Majesty of the Grand Canyon: 150 Years in Art
Published in Hardcover by 1st Glance Books (June, 1998)
Author: Joni Louise Kinsey
Average review score:

subjective views by artists of a natural wonder!
A beautifully illustrated overview of artistic responses to America's most famous natural wonder. Ranging from portrayals by early expeditionary artists to recent panoramas that exult in the region's chromatic and geological complexity, this book examines a diverse array of imagery in historical context, augmented by a profusion of literary, scientific, and historical quotations about the canyon and its sublime effects.

First documenting the canyon's potential as a navigable waterway, then working for railroad companies interested in the area's tourist value, artists today are drawn to the region for a host of reasons, but all continue to be fascinated by its enduring spectacle. The Majesty of the Grand Canyon celebrates their achievements and explores their struggle to approach the epic grandeur.

A great history AND art AND art history for both kids and adults, USA-ers and non-USA-ers esp. not likely to see in person, or if you have been so lucky, reinforces those wonderful memories!

Invites the reader to ponder tantalizing mysteries
Wonderfully illustrated with sketches and Glenn Chang's full-color photography, The Mystery Of The Anasazi At Frijoles Canyon is the story of a family who learns about the ways of an ancient people's past while walking among the remains of former dwellings. Deftly woven into a fictional narrative, author Suzanne Kita provides anthropological theories based on the cultural artifacts they left behind, regarding the Anasazi who once resided there, and then invites the reader to ponder tantalizing mysteries about early Native American civilization. A gorgeously presented and informative tour, couched in the format of a fictionalized narrative, The Mystery Of The Anasazi At Frijoles Canyon is an unusual and highly recommended addition to school and community library collections.

National Geographic Grand Canyon National Park Arizona, USA: Trails Illustrated

Authors: Trails Illustrated Staff and Treasure Chest Books

A Great Planning Tool
This Trails Illustrated map is a great tool for initial planning of your adventure into the Grand Canyon's spectacular backcountry. The map covers Grand Canyon National Park backcountry in its entirety. Almost. But close enough for most. The 1:73,530 scale and 80' contour interval make this map of limited use for on trail use, but make useful for getting an overview of the canyon and a sense of your options.

This map is also packed with information useful for planning your Grand Canyon trip. Backcountry use areas, necessary for making a permit request, are designated on the map. So are camp sites, campgrounds, and water sources in the GC's backcountry.

Very handy.

The National Parks of Northern Mexico : A Complete Guidebook to Mexico'sCopper Canyon, Sea of Cortez, Baja, Sierra Del Carmens, etc.
Published in Paperback by Sunracer Publications (01 June, 1994)
Author: Richard D. Fisher

A guide to wondrous adventures
In the mid 1980s I bought the first edition of this book. It was a much smaller yet still beautiful edition. When the new edition came out in '94 I was quick to pick that one up. This new version is much expanded and elaborated. So what is this book? It is a combination of a travel guide, an ethno-historical book and a book on local botany, Indians and geology sprinkled heavily with gorgeous photographs. Richard Fisher has put decades of his life into making this flawless account of the area. Whether you are visiting the national parks of Mexico by road, off-road or railroad, you will need this book. I have used this book many times to research an area before going there. The book will take you to lost mission churches, huge waterfalls, off-world looking landscapes and everywhere in between.

Back To Latigo
No Man Canyon was like a "Who Done It"... as good as any mystery I've ever read. You get so involved and attached to every character as Mr. Bales brings them to life for you. From beginning to end this was a book that you can't put down. Definately a "Five Star" book!
